Rose for Emily by William Faulkner

“A Rose for Emily” is a short story written by author William Faulkner. His work was first published in a magazine publication in the United States during the 1930s. This piece of work would go on to be one of his most admired creative writings. The short story is fictional content that most people can relate to. Many people think it is a creatively written horror story with a style defined as unconventional. The story makes an important point about time and the past. Many people like to think about the past since there are good memories there. But, not moving forward could prove to be scarier than you could imagine.

The story features several characters including Miss Emily Grierson. The story actually starts with her funeral. It has been said that she has not been seen by her neighbors for years. She lived in a big house that was given to her by her father when he passed away. At one point the house has a grand look. She did not have to pay taxes on the property because she had a good relationship with the people that ran the town. The community wasn’t too fond of this idea but this element was nothing compared to what the author would later introduce.

Emily dated a man many in the town didn’t approve of. At one point they thought she wanted to take her own life. She grows older and dies in her home which brings readers back to how the story started. There was a room in the house that had not seen the light of day for years. After Miss Emily’s burial the townspeople go to the house and break down the door. They find the corpse of the man she had a relationship the town disapproved of.

Emily had a hard time dealing with the passing of her father. For a while she did not want to admit that he was gone. She was left with a house but no money to take care of it. After her father’s passing she engages in a number of weird events that had some thinking she was crazy. In the end it seemed as if she did not want to let go of the concept that her father was gone. She would either stay in the house for years or go somewhere that people did not know she visited.
